On vacation in Delray Beach, stumbled across a Facebook ad for a bass I always wanted with the exact mod I always wanted for it: a Vox Panther with active EMG pickup X 2 (there were no bridge pickups on these ... total pro job on the routing and p/g). Got a superb deal at 450 -- thanks Debbie! -- and it even includes the OG Tolex case. Just a few dings here and there, nothing through the finish, and neck is perfect. AND it might just fit in the overhead on the flight back!

It's exquisite, but I have my doubts about the overhead flying. You may have to check it. And I would try to find more period-correct tuners. The ones on there now are the only things that jar with the overall aesthetics.

But it certainly is an envy-inducing instrument. Cherish it.

This, as I recall, was Vox's first venture into the "broomstick" neck. To be followed by (many years later)

Always love the SAC even though they were "one hit wonders" - Dano electric sitar, Vox Constellation hollow-body bass, Farfisa organ, Nehru jackets, paisley patterns, cool gold-pattern drum-kit... I saw their wacky custom guitars in a shop in Marin years ago. If I remember correctly they were made by Mosrite.

These look like the poster children for neck-dive.

It's a good looking bass, it has been modified. The slanted jazz type pick ups look like they go with the design of the pickguard (like it was originally designed that way). I wouldn't worry about the tuners because this is a modified bass, they are black and they match.

Agreed that because they are black the tuners "match" the color scheme, but IMO the shafts are too long and project too far out from the headstock. My objection is based on aesthetics and not vintage original versus modded.

THIS still blows me away....... The fact that the lead guitar player was Ed King, of Lynyrd Skynyrd fame. To hear those cool psychedelic leads and then think of his amazing chicken-pickin' lead in "Sweet Home Alabama" just shows how versatile he was. RIP.
