What would be a good fingering for a 'universal' minor scale for a fretless bass? I want to be able to transfer it to the upright as well. Would it be like 1-4-4 ascending and 4-4-1 (or 4-2-1) descending?
I assume you mean natural (aolian) minor? You generally want to avoid 4-4 ascending. It is weak and tends to crumple the hand, plus you always want to anticipate the next note. For upright fingering, I would go with 1-2-4, 1-2-4, 1-4 ascending; 4-1, 4-4-1, 4-4-1 descending.
