US folk: does your employer/school give you Martin Luther King Day off?

MLK Day: a day off for you?

  1. USC is completely closed on MLK Day--the university's gates are even locked (and we're talking about a fairly formidable barrier, being that it's in South Central and all)--but my roommate, who works at Northrop Grumman up in Azusa, has work. I find it somewhat odd that the nation's second-largest defense contractor doesn't give its employees a federal holiday off.

How 'bout the rest of you?

(BTW, please don't answer this poll if you're not a US resident.)

Not a day off, but then again, I work in a restaurant. (And the semester hasn't started yet).

I pretty sure my brother has work(works at another large DoD contractor)...anyway, it's their unions' fault, IMO.

Anyway, MLK Day is one of my 10 Federal holidays.
I kinda wish the Super Bowl was this weekend.

I work at a Teen Center. I have to go in earlier because the kids aren't in school.

(But I don't mind, I need the hours.)

    It's a FEDERAL holiday.

I work in the food business. We work Monday so
my customers get their food shipments next week.
On time. Every week. All year.

I take off Thanksgiving Day, Xmas, July 4th and New Years. I also take Memorial Day, because that is my choice. I pay for it in unpaid overtime the
    next day.

But you get your fish delivered. On time, I hope.

My rubbish guy works more than I do, the trash stream continues, he takes a day off, he has to make up later for the Xmas he spent with the kids ... by working overtime.

    Glorius ....

Here, it's a four-day weekend for the day whores (mission-support folks with Mon-Fri work schedules), plus next Friday off for Lunar New Year (which is actually Thursday). Tough life.

For those of us with a 24/7/365 mission, it's business as usual. I'll be working a swing, keeping a wary eye on those godless commie bastards to the north (no offense to present company), so everyone else can get stinko. No tears though--I have Tues night off, and it's $1 beer night downtown. I'd say that's a fair trade.
