Hey folks, I have an opportunity to buy a USA made Hamer Chapparal bass from the late 80's. I played it and thought it was a nice instrument, even though I'm pretty much of a Fender guy. Does anyone have any experience/opinions about these basses and what do you think would be a reasonable price to pay for it? Thanks!
It is hard to go wrong with a USA Hamer. They have always been made with excellent wood, components and electronics and the workmanship is always impeccable. You should be able to get that Chap bass for less than $500, maybe much less, depending on its condition.
Oh yeah, you can find tons of Hamer lovers and get lots of info at http://www.hamerfanclub.com. My main bass is a 1996 Hamer 2-Tek CruiseBass...the best Jazz Bass Fender never made.
I do most of my Genz Benz demos at NAMM and in dealer's stores with a Chappral. Genz is owned by Kaman who owns Hamer as well. My Chapparl is custom though. The only thing custom about it is the headstock is two on a side instead of four. I assume the one you're looking at is four on a side. I have two EMG humbuckers in mine......an excellent slap bass.
