USA Osborn - might change finish from poly to nitro

Just throwing this out there for discussion.
I have a sunbursted USA Jo Osborn with the standard poly finish and thinking about sending it to have the finish stripped and refinished with nitro. Sunbursted.
Are there pros out there who do this type of work?
Anybody ever do something like this with one of their instruments?

Its your bass, but to me it seems like a waste of money. Also, you are going to decrease the value of your JO by doing this. Why not just sell it and get a Fender custom shop 64 Jazz? Michael Dolan and Lay's Guitars come to mind for quality refins.

Pat Wilkins who by many consider the best guitar finisher in the industry can do it and for the record, he's the one that put the finish that's on it now.

Here are just a few of the companies that Pat Wilkins does finishes for besides USA Laklands.

    Steinberger( Epiphone)
    Some MTD's
    Jordan Violins
    Wood Violins

and these are a few of the companies that Pat use to do finishes for.

    Tom Anderson
    Pensa Suhr
    John Suhr
    Fender Custom Shop
    Zeta Violins
Pat is also the original guitar painter for Schecter guitars of the 70's and hes painted a guitar or Bass for probably every major player out there.
  4. Interesting post JAUQO III-X.

I went to the site but didn't see anything about refinishing exisitng basses.

Any idea how much they charge?

What kind of difference to you expect for the $300+ you're going to shell out for this? It's not going to look any different, or feel very different. Just be more prone to wear.

I believe Pat also finishes Mike Lull's basses. I have five basses that Pat finished, and each one of them is flawless. They're all poly, and I'd never willingly get any other finish just for the durability. I worked closely with Pat to get my JO5 finished in pink, and it's just beautiful. What's interesting is every time I called Pat's shop, he answered the phone and it was a major pleasure to deal with him.

Oh heck, I might as well post a sample of his work.

  8. +1... I can see going from Nitro to Poly if you get tired of ths scratches and dings, but never really heard of people going the other direction.

Mike Dolan will do a nitro refin I'm pretty sure. No disrepect Jauqo III-X, but I'm not sure Wilkins does nitro...
I seem to recall inquiring about that with him a while ago, and I don't think he does them...

Op, please let us know if you find out that he does! The basses and guitars on his site look great. I wasn't aware he had his own line...

Pat charges around $350 IIRC. But more if he has to strip it himself.

Also, I am pretty sure Pat DOES NOT shoot Nitro. Only poly.

On the topic of going nitro to poly... makes no sense to me at all. Yu aren't going to hear any difference.

I agree with Ken, it is just throwing spending money for nothing.

Whatever it is that you're not digging about that bass right now, a body refin to nito is not going to fix it.

Pat doesn't do actual nitro. He has another finish that is very thin and it's actually thinner than nitro.

When I sent my Lull to Mike's shop last year for a different finish, he was using Jerry Dorsch. Mike did however at one time have his basses finished by Pat Wilkins

Man, I never thought I'd like a pink bass, but I'd love to have one now!!!

This is true. The shipping back and forth from Washington to CA and back to Washington was just too much for Mike. We've parted good friends and I would still do finishes for him if he ever got into a pinch. BTW I've lost a few good customers over the years for that very same reason. The shipping back and forth is killing small businesses.

These fine gents shoot nitro, do relic work, and even build instruments:

They restored my 1955 P-bass, bless them, and did a great job.
Heck, I can't resist posting pics, either...even though it ain't pink:

Yup, that's what he told me.

And Pat stripped and repainted my bass (In Honda Element Orange) for 300 bucks.

Yeah, even the higher end MIA Fenders (except for the Vintage series) are poly but very thin coats.
