In anticipation of having to actually pay for my soon-to-be Roscoe, it's time for me to thin my herd. My beloved Alembic Europa hasn't been out of the case in 6 months, so I can't justify hanging onto it. Somebody needs to be playing this fantastic bass!!

    First, the bass porn:
    ALEMBIC-FRONT.
    ALEMBIC-BACK.
    ALEMBIC-CLOSEUP-FRONT.
    ALEMBIC-CLOSEUP-BACK.
    ALEMBIC-PERSPECTIVE.

    And now the gory specs:
    1992 Alembic Europa 5-String
    Scale Length: 34"
Thru body neck: 4 maple + 3 purple heart laminates
    Fingerboard: Ebony
    Nut Width: 1.875"
    24th fret width: 2.930"
    Truss rods: Dual, body adjust
Body wood: Mahogany w/ Redwood Burl top
    Body depth: 1.50"
Finish: High gloss polyester (including back of neck)
    Pickups: MXY56
Controls: vol, pan, low-pass filter w/ Q switch, quick tone change switches (bass and treble cut/boost)
    Tailpiece: Solid brass bird
    Machine heads: Gold Alembic-Gotoh
100% Made in Santa Rosa, CA

    And my description:
This was my one and only bass for about 15 years, and it saw a lot of action. That shows on the finish. There's no shortage of dings, and the finish on the back is quite checked. The finish is not worn through anywhere, it's just not pristine.

The gold tuners and the brass brige hardware are slightly tarnished, as you would expect on a 17-year old bass.

The electronics and the frets are in excellent shape. I had a pro fret job done two years ago, and the bass has hardly been played since. The action on this guy is the way I like - freaky low. The electronics are 100% original, except for the input jack which I replaced with a genuine Alembic replacement part.

Tonally, the bass is deep and crisp. Lots of snap for a great slap tone, and there's plenty of low end.

The bass comes in an Alembic form-fit case. This is case #2 or #3 that I got from Alembic, I wore the first ones out :) One of the latches on this case is busted, so I'd probably be looking to get another case ($150 from Alembic?) if I were actually still taking this bass out.

I'm asking $2499, but will consider any reasonable offers. Shipping is free in the US, or $150 international.

I should also mention that this bass has a wide string spacing both at the bridge AND at the nut. For any of you guys with bigger hands, this is a dream bass. I've got medium hands, and it's still comfortable for me. But I think guys like Ryan L. who love wide string spacing would go ga-ga over this bass.

I can't believe you're actually doing this, Greg...

I can vouch for it's playability, though. It's one badass little 5'r.

Yeah, I had some serious second thoughts yesterday after plugging it in and playing on it for half an hour... it sounds sooooo good!!

If this one doesn't go, I'll put my Warwick up instead... the Alembic sounds better and has MUCH more sentimental value to me, but I've grown accustomed to the thinner Warwick neck... it's a toss up.

  6. What's the string spacing at the bridge, and what's the overall weight of the bass? Thanks.

The string spacing is 18mm at the bridge and 10mm at the nut, and the bass weighs 11.25 lbs. You'd definitely want a thick strap, but that's true of most Alembics. I played many a 4-hour night with the bass on a sheepskin padded strap, and it never killed my back.

  8. That's about the same weight as my Small Standards and a heck of a lot lighter than my 6er...14 pounds of fun!
How's the reach to the first position, considering the length of the top horn? Much different than a Fender?

Oh, the reach is fine. I wear the bass pretty high, and it's still very comfortable for me to get to the first fret. I'm 5' 11" and not particularly gangly.

For me, the long horn actually pulls the 1st fret closer to me. The body sort of goes to my right slightly, if that makes sense... I guess that could be because I wear it kinda high.

  10. Understood. My 6 is a regular Standard Point with the short horn, strapped up high so it'll balance, and I have to chase that low F around the room if I want to play it on the E string. :rollno:
Lemme chew on this for a while. You're looking for more than I was hoping to spend, but it's definitely worth a good, hard think.
    Thanks for the info.

Wow, are you serious? Dang!! I've toyed with the idea of becoming an Alembic dealer, but that's too rich for my blood.

So $2499 shipped is officially a steal :)

List is around $10K...street price on Alembic is usually 15-20% off list.

Don't become an Alembic dealer? Or don't buy the bass?

If you're serious about avoiding the dealer thing, I'd love for you to PM me your reasons. I don't want anyone blasting Alembic here in public, but I would appreciate hearing privately about any real world experience you might have dealing with those folks as a retailer. Great products don't always mean great customer service...

I know as an Alembic end user, I've always been thrilled by Alembic's customer service. They really do treat you right. I've never dealt with them as a retailer, though... I can't imagine that experience would be wildly different, but ya never know.

  16. $10,100 list with your bass' exact specs, ~$8K new street price, maybe half that used and 100% mint.

Wow! Their prices have certainly gone up since 1992 :)

Yep, I'm fine with $2499 because of the condition of the bass. I want to make sure whoever buys this bass has their eyes wide open and ideally is pleasantly suprised by the condition rather than dissappointed.
