I know a guy who has a Geddy Lee Jazz bass that he wants to sell for $250. That sounds like a great deal but here's the kicker. It has a small crack on the back/bottom (About an inch long) where it was dropped on a concrete floor (strap lock malfunction) He says you can not see the crack from the front and it has not effected playability or sound at all. I personally have not seen the bass yet so I dont know exactly what the crack looks like but if it's not causing any structural problems does that sound like a good deal? I would hate to not be able to get my money back out of it if I decide to sell it down the road.

Thanks as always for your help!

I am seeing them go used for 600+ these days. I got mine late last year for $550 used on ebay. So, that being said, if it doesnt affect sound or playability I would say thats a good deal (though I would say something like...Ill give you $200 because I like you :D)

$250 sounds about right, in my opinion. Those go for ~$650 used on eBay, and even if the body is totally trashed, you could replace it with a new licensed Fender black body for less than $400 and break even.

  4. I would LOVE to find one for 250, however that "crack" doesn't sound good. If the crack is only in the finish and not a split in the wood then I would go for it.

  5. dude that sounds like a great deal man! I own one and I'd have a hard time selling it...take a look at it and play around with it-if it's good to play and it should be-then go for it. I guess the real question is can you play it with a strap at all?

I had a Geddy Lee bass but sold it because I like my MIA Fender and stingray better and it wasn't getting any playing time. I sold it for $525.00 in great shape. $250 for the bass is a low risk IMO. If you play it and it sounds good then that's a great deal for a blemish no one will see except you. Even if you could never sell it again whats $250 in todays world. Keep it or Donate it to a aspiring bass player with no equipment.

I wouldn't call an inch-long crack in the body a "blemish," but I agree, that wouldn't ruin a bass for me. I'd want enough of a discount that I could replace the body down the road, if necessary, and still break even, though.

Ok good. I was thinking along the same lines of all of your comments. It's good to know that even if I need to replace the body I would still not be in the hole. That puts my mind at ease a bit. I'll let you guys know how it goes and post pictures if I decide to buy it. I dont know what I would do without this site! :bassist:

    Where exactly is the crack?

I might pay more than $250 if it's in a place that's not likely to be any sort of problem, except cosmetic. If it were around the neck pocket, $250 is the most I'd pay (the neck & electronics alone are worth that). If it's out of the way of the electronics cavity and lengthwise (not front-to-back), and not splitting apart, I might go to $300 or even $350, if it seems unlikely I would need to replace the body at all, and it wouldn't affect tone or playability whatsoever.

Anyway, $250 is a good/fair deal. Post pics when you get it!

Based on his description to me, I think it is on the back near the bottom strap lock. He said it happend when the strap came off the button while playing and if fell so I it probably hit the ground near that button. He replaced the buttons with Schaller strap locks after that.

Wow. Thanks for the links. Seeing those prices makes this a no brainer.
