Using EBG to practice DB TP fingering

Discussion in 'Jazz Technique [DB]' started by jneuman, Jul 26, 2004.

  1. This may have been covered elsewhere but I think it is important enough to warrant it's own thread.

I have found that a very good way to get tricky thumb position fingering and shifts into my head and hands is to work it out on Slab, first at the octave, and then down a fourth (so that G becomes D on the G string) where the spacing is the same as on DB. This works very well. Having the frets helps with maintaining the proper finger spacing esp. with Diatonic and Semi-cromatic hand shapes and helps the brain understand finger replacements with tricky shifts.

Anybody else do this? I was inspired to do this reading about Brian Bromberg who uses DB TP technique on Fender Bass.

    Steve Bailey does it too.
