Using gates in Cubase SX

Discussion in 'Recording Gear and Equipment [BG]' started by Hobbes, Feb 11, 2003.

  1. Hey people,

I've got Cubase SX on my computer and know how to use the noise gate to gate a signal, however I was wondering if (and how) it is possible to sidechain another instrument into an existing channel's gate settings. For example, if I gated a drum channel, could I then route a channel containing a pad sound into this same gate so that as the gate opens/closes for the drums it does also for the pad, giving the pad a rhythmic effect. Many thanks for any help anyone can give.

  3. Unfortunately I don't have SX on this machine, and it depends on how your mixer is setup and the plugin or built in effect you're using. I'm don't think SX's gate has sidechain capabilities, and I don't think either DX or VST plugins do either. :(

A friend was telling me that the new VST 3 format will have that capabilitiy though. Someone might be able to chime in hear and correct me if I'm wrong (which is entirely possible).

I'd try running a few searches on some other recording forums that are out there. Let us know what you find, if anything.

  4. I tried on homerecording.com, but didn't really get any answer. I'm in at college tomorrow so will ask one of the teachers there, and I'll post tomorrow if I've found out by then.
