Using guitar tuners for a short scale - anyone done it?

Discussion in 'Luthier's Corner' started by reverendrally, Sep 26, 2013.

  1. Thinking about a fanned fret short scale 6 string (bass VI style) and I'd like to build it using guitar tuners. I'm thinking 32-29" or there abouts

Anyone done this? Thoughts on which tuners to use?

8 string guitars are pretty much that. Ibanez m8m is a 30" scale 8 string with regular guitar tuners. I'd go with something with a high gear ratio, like hipshot classic open.

  3. I did a conversion neck once standard 25.5" to 30.29" bass VI style frankensquier.I used Grover full-size rotomatic tuners with the pegs on the E and A strings drill out to fit the bigger strings.
    Worked great :bassist:

I did the same with my Ibanez Mikro baritone conversion.
