Using the "mic" channel for BG on a Focus 2

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by Tom Baldwin, Oct 11, 2004.

  1. I am considering the purchase of a Focus 2. When I have to double, I'd like to be able to use the instrument channel for DB, since the high pass filter is particularly useful and only works with that channel. So that leaves the mic channel for BG (XLR input), which I assume would require a transformer or preamp/direct box with XLR out. Anybody do this or could speculate how/if it would work? Any drawbacks to this scenario? Or recommendations as far as what to use for the conversion?

It'll work fine with a DI box. Countryman would be superb, but pricey. Whirlwind, ProCo are good options. You can even use something with some EQ like a SABDDI.

I spoke with Rick Jones about that and he went off and tried it in the lab using a cheap Rat Shack style $15 inline transformer and said it worked fine. He said there was a slight loss of high end (which you can compensate for with EQ) with a passive bass but the level is OK.
