    Hi all.

I have a Trace Elliot 250SMX bass amp and it's a 12 band half valve half transister jobby.
It's been toured alot and im thinking about replacing the valve.

What would people recommend I get?

Hope people can help, my knowlege of this sort of thing is very limited!

Those preamp tubes can last for decades. If it ain't broke, why fix it?

I bet nobody has the old tube checkers anymore - where you can check the emission of the cathode (that's what slowly degrades over time). And yet amp makers are just raking in the dough on these tube jobbies... oh well.

Fortunately (and strangely) replacements 12ax7's are fairly cheap (if your amp uses the 12ax7 that is). I'd recommend a Russian made tube over the Chinese made one. I think the Groove Tubes are relabeled Svetlanas and cost a couple more bucks than the Chinese made ones. The Svetlanas tend to be a little more well made tho were never made as well as the US-made tubes like the Sylvania....
