Has anyone had a chance to try out Villex pickups? Their design looks intriguing - passive but with a mid control.

(I did a search on this forum but didn't find any recent threads.)

    thanks!

I guess my question is, if you were to remove the Bart pickups from a Modulus and drop in the Villex (not that you could actually do this), how would you describe the tonal difference? For instance, Barts are generally considered "warmer" than EMGs, so how would the Villex pups compare to the Barts?

I've not been able to find any music shops locally that have Villex-equipped basses. I'm beginning to wonder if there is a reason for that...

    cheers,

The villex pickups that I have checked out were a little hotter than the Barts, but not as hot as EMG's.and one of the reasons you may not see them is that they are a small co.,and basicaly new.give Rich Ross of Modulus a call if you want a little more info at 1-866-modulus.he's their Bass specialist.

    JAUQO III-X,

I've got a voice message into Rich but have not heard anything back yet. But let me ask you... when you played with the Villex pups, did you happen to notice how quiet (or noisy) they were when playing only a single pickup?

    thanks

Give Rich a moment he will get back with you.each Modulus I've played that had the Villex pickups are very quiet.thats one of the things the Villex pickups are known for.and if you like you can contact Anderson Page of Modulus at 415-884-2300 x 105 he's in charge of artist relations.

    This is strange...

Have not yet heard back from Rich (although it's a moot point now since I've already decided to place the order through Bass NW).

But it gets interesting... according to Chad at BassNW, he's not been able to get in contact with anyone at Modulus since the first part of last week. He's left messages with several people and has not gotten any phone calls back. Given that BassNW is a major Modulus dealer, this is surprising. If Modulus takes a summar "siesta", they should at least communicate this to their customer - if only via a recorded phone message.

Anyway, just something else to keep me awake at night.

(And don't even get me started on my grassy knoll theory....)
    ;)

I think if you dealt direct.with the guys at Modulus you would come out better.

Anderson and I have traded emails in the past - he was helpful and answered questions I had about non-standards configurations I was exploring for a Flea and Quantum. But in BassNW's defense, they have been very accomodating to me and quick to get back to me when I've needed their assistance. (They probably consider me the "customer from hell" now.)

    :)

I'm guessing that Modulus is just out on a post-NAMM summer vacation.

Wow. Nothing like getting the info direct from the source. ;)

I appreciate the offer but for now, it's a moot point. I was looking at adding a Modulus Flea (with your Villex system) to my collection but have decided in the past couple of days to put that plan on hold. However, I am very intrigued as to how you are able to make a pickup system that has all the characteristics of an active system (advanced tone control, higher output, etc.) and yet keep it passive. Are there plans to add separate bass/treble controls to the system?

    thanks again,
    darrelpr

    Hello Darrelpr.
Yes, we are planning to build passive low and high controls.
We even have pretty good working one, but so far it is no match for
the great mid. Also we don't really believe that low and high really belong to
bass guitar, it is more like a part of amplifier for basic correction of sound.
But mid control, and specially Villex interactive one, changes character of the sound
and will give you a lot of flexibility (but that is just our opinion).
Will be happy to discuss it in more details.
