Vintage 1960's Gretsch Hollowbody bass. The model number is 6072, but it is also unofficially known as the "Country Gentleman" Bass due to the same body size and shape. Big long scale neck. Has the rare, and factory retractable end-pin (as seen in the photos), allowing for the bass to be tilted up and played like an upright bass. Not all of these basses came with that feature, as for it was an added feature available from the factory. Also has the original leather case, which is a funky and hard to find gig bag of sorts.

**1/5/2015 Update** Dated the serial number, dates out to 1963.

Plays great, feels great, sounds excellent. Beautiful flamed maple on the back of the neck.

    What's Original:

the wood, the frets, the finish on the back of the neck, the back of the headstock, the back of the body, essentially the entire back, the back buckle rash pad / guard, the tuners, the bridge, knobs, internal wiring guts, end pin, tailpiece, nut, the case, the tone caps, the mojo.

    What's not Original:

The top face of the body was refinished, the pickups were swapped out, which appear to be custom made. They sound fat and full with a wide frequency spectrum.

While cash is king, I am also interested and open to trades. I am very interested in a Rickenbacker 4001 or 4003. While I'm mostly interested in vintage basses, don't be shy on your offer, chances are I'm interested in whatever.

Let me know if you would like any more info or pictures.

Was the empty hole another volume control? What happened with that?

On the lower bout? Yes, at one point it was a master volume. I have another bass from this era, and it has two volumes and a master volume, as well as the pre-determined tone switch. This one could be wired up that way again. The way that it is now is the way that I got it, I didn't do any of that stuff to it.

Someone sent me an inquiry if I have any audio samples of the bass to hear what the pickups sound like. I don't happen to have an isolated bass recording of it, however I do have a track online that I can point you to where I used it in the studio. If you look up Jamestown Revival on either Spotify or iTunes, there is a song called "Home" which I used the bass on. It's the last track on our album "Utah". Brendan O'Brien, our record producer, really liked the tone of the bass and chose it in specific for that tune for me to use out of the dozens of basses I brought into the studio.

I'm up in Northern California at the moment for the holidays... when I get back home in Hollywood I'll head into my recording studio and record up an isolated bass track and post it for everyone to hear...

That is what I figured it was. I've had a couple of vintage Gretsch guitars but never a bass.

Ok folks, I had what appeared to be a solid trade in the works, but at the last hour it didn't go through due to the other guys better half giving the red light... that being said, the bass is still up for grabs!

    Fine folks of Talk Bass:

Following up, I did happen to make some audio recordings just now...

Let me know if this link worked... I wound up kind of throwing this recording together. What I did was put together a drum loop, then recorded the Gretsch, followed by a '76 Fender P-bass, then a 67 Gretsch (same kind but with the Supertron Pickups), then a newer USA Fender Jazz Bass for reference. I had never done this type of shootout before between my various basses, and in all honesty I would be curious to see if your take away is the same as mine... in that this Gretsch that I have up here won the shootout.

The signal flow is just bass straight into a Universal Audio LA-610 with EQ flat, straight into my Digi002 into protools, and it's wav files, so there's no weird compression or loss of sample rates.

I included one link with the drum loop to put it in context, then rendered the file with no drum loop where it's just isolated bass audio. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Oh, and I also dated the Serial number to 1963.

Hi everyone, received an email noting the slight amount of "buzz" in the first initial recording of the Gretsch, compared to the others... I think it had to do with how close I was sitting next to the laptop when I made the first recording... then moved it back on the desk a bit after that. Other than that "adjustment", I didn't touch any other settings.

...and should also be noted that I was palm muting a bit on these tracks, let me know if anyone would like to / needs to hear something different or a bit more wide open...
