volume pot hum on a J-bass?

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by gvelush1, Mar 4, 2014.

  1. so on my Jazz Bass, i get a wicked hum unless the two volume knobs are turned to matching settings...i usually just keep them both at 10 and use the amp and the fingers for dynamics but i'd like to nip this one in the grundle.

so...is it a shielding issue? a grounding issue? insanity?

Is the hum affected by you touching metal/strings/bridge? If the hum goes away when touching metal you have a shielding issue, if it gets louder you have a ground issue. If the noise remains unaffected it is probably just due to the single coils picking up electrical noise and nothing you can do, but I would double check the wiring anyways, specifically the ground wire under the bridge. The pickups become humbuckers when both turned on full.
