I don't know how close the sound is to the actual unit, but the SVP-BSP is the better sounding Ampeg preamp on BassTasters, to my ears anyway. It really sounded good with the 60's Jazz Bass.

  3. I'm really interested in the Fender. I think there's someone on TB that loves his. Are those your only options? How about Alembic, BBE, Avalon, Demeter? What power amp and cabs are you going to use with this rig? Sorry for all of the questions, I just got done redoing my rig and I ended up with a QSC PLX2402 and an Avalon U5, after a couple of moths of trying different pre's out, and I'm extremely happy....for the moment.

im in like a jazz fusion type three piece right now and i am not a slapper i am a finger picker and would like a nice warm tone. I play a fender mim fretless jazz bass with emg's in it right now.

i have never played through a alembic f1-x before so i don't know what they sound like but i would love to hear more about it.

i have decided that for now its between the

    ampeg svp-pro

    amper svt-cl

I love the SWR IOD. Great preamp. But then again, so are the others ;)

Buy an Aguilar DB659 or DB680. You'll thank me later.

SWR or Fender on that list.

BBE, Demeter, Alembic, Trace V-type and Avalons etc all sound good too.

the swr iod is a little more expensive, do you think its worth it?

and does anyone know the difference between the two ampeg preamps i listed earlier?

IOD is definately worth it. Oe you could go for a MiniMo, just a mere $1050 :smug: . The two Ampegs sound a little different; I'd go with the Cl myself.

sorry for being super picky, but what makes the iod better than the ampeg preamp?

Can you get nice sounding warm tube tones as well as the overdriven tones?

Plenty of nice warm round 3d tube tones, but it excells in the overdrive. You will never find an overdrive better than the IOD, except in a tube power section.

thanks a lot man, the iod was my gut instinct at first since i got the swr head and cab, but some other guys were talking up the ampeg preamps, but i think after talking to you i will go with the IOD after all. thanks a lot man, i really appreciate it!

hey mark, let us know how it goes for you. i played a set today with my IOD and dialed in a slight touch of grit from the power tubes and it gave me that nice satisfying but subtle crunch. i love it so much more than the lighter, fuzzy overdrive from preamp tube overdrive.
