are there any (preferably free :) ) programs that just provide you with a quick and easy way to play softsynths? i just want something i can throw on my laptop for live performances to use as a sound module. it doesn't have to record or anything, and if i had my choice it would have a really quick, possibly midi assignable way of switching VST instruments.

VST 2.0 (Virtual Studio Technology) is Steinberg's proprietary protocol for virtual FX and instruments.
It is similar to DirectX FX and DirectX instruments, but VST is more powerful.

There are software adaptors, so-called "wrappers", that enables to use VST FX as DX FX, but you may loose some funtionality, e.g. automation.

    Wrappers:

FXpansion's VST DX adaptor was bought by Cakewalk.
