this movie is great. it seemed like it was german-engineered to win oscars, i think. wookie phoenix ( ) and reese witherspoon were great. they sung terrificly! i'm not even a real big fan of cash's music, but i was really getting into it. and that tour of all of the sun records artists (presumably) must have been monumental! jerry lee lewis, elvis presley, and johnny cash. man. it's two and a half hours long (aka, harry potter length), but i didn't really anxious about leaving! the only criticism i can think of is that there was a part where johnny cash was strapped for, well... cash. ...and then a few minutes later he buys a big lake-front property. i'll chalk that up to keeping the movie under three hours, though. really good movie!
4 hours? Sheesh...how's any other movie supposed to compete with that when it comes to the oscars. They've doubled their chances over most other movies. brad cook
4 hours? I don't think so. They try and have the Harry Potter movies at roughly 2 and a half hours. Why do you think they added so much screentime to the LOTR extended editions? Because they didn't want to have a movie over 3 hours in length at the theatre, its just too much to take in(not to mention severe pain in the anal region). HP felt like 4 hours though.
haha. i was hoping if there were any tangents based off of my first post in this thread, it would have been about my use of "wookie" as the first name of wookie phoenix.
Thanks for the review Brad. I will probably go see it with my wife. I have liked Joaquin Phoenix since I saw him in Gladiator. I thought he was great in Buffalo Soldiers also. -Mike
I went to see it last Friday. Wasn't bad, but ... : They sure glossed over his prison time for his drug arrest; They sure glossed over when his first wife left; They sure made Waylon Jennings look like a Hippie nerd; They sure glossed over a lot of other aspects of his life. And to add insult to injury, at about the point where there was 15 minutes left to the movie, the 'Movie Trivia' repeating track fired up at the same time and was shown on top of the film, along with the soundtrack to sell popcorn and merchandise. At this point the audience started getting pretty heated up. 10 people ran out and started complaining to the manager. And we all started demanding they rerun the last 15 mins. The projectionist must have been on 'POT'. ( Woodstock movie reference). Likely, they couldn't do that because they new projectors are computer operated, and like all dastardly computers, are subject to weird quirks. Backing the reel up 15 mins was not an option. The manager was Johnny-on-the-spot there handing out red tickets from a roll labeled 'Emergency Free Pass'. Apparently, this seems to be the 'Standard Policy' when they 'Screw Up'. Pretty interesting, they think that since I had a bad experience in their establishment, I am really happy to give them another chance to abuse my family and me for free the next time. This is kind of like a bad restaurant, "Waiter, this food is really bad!" "Great sir! Here is a discount coupon for your next visit!". Do you really WANT to go back? Anyway, the movie wasn't too bad, it was actually pretty similar to the Buddy Holly story with some small variations. Phoenix did Cash a lot better than Busey did Holly. And the movie was a lot better than most of the pulp crap Hollywood pumps out nowadays, Dukes of Hazzard reruns, Rocky 18 and Bimbo the Silicone Whale.
Glad to hear the props, I was leery. Wookie Phoenix just doesn't look big and commanding enough to me to play JC. Not the physical presence, at least in the commercials I've seen. Isn't he like 5'8"? And Reese W. like 5' nothin'? All the shots I remember in the commercials looked like they were angled to make them look bigger. I was impressed that they sang their own parts. And I loved Busey as Buddy Holley!
Um dude...the hippie nerd was Shooter Jennings. Waylon's son was playing his old man. That long-haired, bearded, the-phone-is-disconnected scene? That's sort of how he looks normally. 'Hippie nerd.' HAHahahahahahahaha...ha ha.............ha .......................... meh.
i wasn't aware of either of the leads' diminutive height. nor was i aware of the actual story, like thor.
Most actors / actresses and TV people are relatively short with big heads. Now why I would notice that or care about is for my Psychiatrist to figure out...
1) i don't think that's accurate, unless you are using the term "big heads" figuratively. 2) i also don't think that the word "pended" can be used that way in your sig.
1. Oh, it's accurate all right. Yep it is. That should be your proof right there... 2. This sig struck me as funny for about an hour....it's been two weeks....off to the sig store...
