Hello fellow TBers. I'm wanting to run my WalkAbout head without a speaker load. I've got a GK 1001RB-II that will run that way according to the manual, but Mesa doesn't say anything about this. Any reason why it won't work?

    Thanks, Alan

ben strange should be able to tell you for sure

however, as a rule, solid state amps can run without a load. there are some odd ones made with output transformers that need a speaker load but these are as rare as hen's teeth.

I can run my Eden WT400 without speakers (it has a headphone out so you can just use it with headphones as a small practice amp).

I'm not sure about Mesa or other tube amps.

The walkabout has a SS power amp it will be fine. Only tube power amps will break when turned on without a load.

I was thinking I'd seen a post from Ben Strange saying it wasn't Mesa-approved to do such a thing, but I can't remember.

Yes, you can run it without speakers. Just don't run it on a 2 ohm load for too long.

Hey Ben, I thought you guys tested them @ 2 ohms and couldn't get them to shut down. Is there new info on this? How long is too long?

    Thanks, Alan

It says in my manual NOT to run it with no load. I use a hotplate with great results. Great product for around $200 on ebay.
