Nah, I'm kidding. Heh, but has anyone heard from Mr Woods recently? Not sure if he's still building or not. I heard that service was discontinued.
Not sure if he's still alive.... Class D has improved a lot over the years. Can't really beat Icepower modules for lightweight/high quality/reliable power in a tiny format.
I've never played a Woods but, yeah, you got me. First thought: "What, he's making new amps?" The second was that it was some sort of compendium/tribute/wiki site put together by a third party (or parties) about the Woods amps.
I was surfing this morning after I woke up, but I *think* I saw someone claiming to the delivery of a new amp in 2020. I know that the logical thing to do would be to call him, but I also know that there is a low probability of him answering based on what I've read. Maybe that adds to the mystique. I'd say that Walter Woods amps are the Klon of the bass world.
Should have known this would not have new gear to look at. But I was hopeful someone was taking over for him to keep things going.
I think he's still around. The rumours of his death were just that, rumours. However, I understand there are some early amplifiers he made which he can no longer repair depending on what breaks. There was a rehearsal studio in Toronto that had one in the early 2000s. I liked it so much I actually spoke to him about making me one. I couldn't afford it so I gave up. He was doing upgrades to some late MI-100s as recently as three years ago. That said, James Genus still gigs his relatively modern WW amp (Electroacoustic?) as his primary... So there must be parts available if he trusts it as his daily driver.
Off topic but it's my favourite bass overdrive. I have the MXR Sugar Drive in reality and regularly use the Klon model in my Helix and a vst in the world of make believe. You should try one, Chinese clones can be had on the cheap.
The Wikipedia article mentions the more recent KTR model, by the same builder, using surface mount technology... You can buy them new for a not-outrageous price, but apparently they go quickly. Saw someone selling one on Reverb for more than double the new price -- not as much as the Centaurs go for, but a healthy markup!
It's crazy, literally thousands of hours of video on YouTube with people comparing the minutiae between the various versions and clones. I like the MXR, it's well built and a nice blue...
I rarely play with pedals and was in no way shopping for a bass overdrive, but now you've got me watching videos and considering getting one of these... Good work!
