Does anyone know or can someone recommend where I can purchase a cheap bass guitar?
I realise that I don’t want to spend much money, but at the same time I want to purchase a bass guitar of reasonable quality. A new or second hand bass is fine as long as it hasn’t been knocked about or overused.

Please don’t send me to ebay! I know they are cheap but I want to purchase from a specialist music shop etc.

    Cheers in anticipation.

If you want somewhere specific to go, you might want to tell us what area you are in. Or do you want suggestions on good value lower priced basses? You might also want to list a price range that you are willing to spend.

My suggestion is to check out the used market if you want to get something of decent quality for a low price. Many of the big companies sell starter kits, but they are generally not that great.

Ebay is not all that bad actually, you just need to be sure that you have checked out who you are buying from and that they are a reputable ebay seller with good feedback and lots of sales under their belt. Apart from ebay, there aren’t many music shops that sell both new and second hand bass guitars.

I noticed some nice bass guitars on Soundsmusical.com the other day. You can buy new or second hand basses and the prices seem very cheap. Check them out here

$219 at Musicians's Friend. Better quality out of the box than SX and brand new instead of EBay.

    What's not to like? :)

if you can swing the $300-$500 go with The Bass Company, who sells through e-bay, or a Mexican made Fender.

If you're looking more at the $100-$150 range, go with an SX from http://RondoMusic.net

Or go to your local music shops, play the basses in your price range, and buy the one that sounds and feels best to you.

I think if you had provided a little more information in your initial request, you would have made it easier for fellow TB ers to reply. If you are living across the pond you probably won't be ordering from musiciansfriend or dropping by your local guitar center anytime soon. If you are living in the states then you just might. The more info you can provide about what you are looking for and where you are living, the better the advice you will receive.
