would putting a different nut than the stock American Fender one on my jbass make it slightly warmer? just a little? It's kinda harsh sometimes, but i like the punch, it just needs a little something. Bone would make it punchier right? what else is there besides steel?

Nut wouldnt make a dramatic difference. I would try maybe changing the pickups to bartolinis or something.

fair enough, i have the s-1 switching system, can i change it out and still switch from series to parallel?

  4. Try different strings. Nickels, maybe even flatwounds (might be too bassy though).

  5. Strings, yes....try different strings...nickels.

Also, perhaps your amplifier is not quite cutting it. Try some different basses in your amp, just to prove it out.
