Warming up away from the bass...

Discussion in 'Jazz Technique [DB]' started by Stereo Joe, Jul 12, 2014.

  1. Let's say you've finished a quick soundcheck or setup and are waiting a half hour until downbeat. Your bass is on the stage and you are standing around or at the bar or in the green room, whatever. What do you do, if anything, to warm up your hands/fingers/body before playing?

I tend to do a body stretching routine so get me nice and limber for playing. Shoulder/back stretches, core stretches, leg stretches.

Massage my hands to get the blood going and keep them warm.

I learned an exercise from Jeff Bradetich where I curl my fingers up tightly and then extend them to a 90 degree angle perpendicular to my palm. Keep repeating quickly.
