So I bought this Planet Waves humidity controlling bag, which has some sort of water retaining material inside. I did this because I don't get the Martin out very often, and I wanted to preserve the wood. Well, over time, unbeknownst to me, the material in the bag broke down and leaked some kind of oily liquid in the bass and soaked the wood, destroyed the finish, etc. I'm going to send it to Martin, but I'm thinking the wood is history. I'm figuring the best they can do outside of rebuilding the box completely is treating the wood with something to stabilize it and make it take a finish again, but nothing can be done for the discoloration and whatever damage has been done to the wood fiber. It even damaged the original Martin strap I got with the bass over 20 years ago. This kills me. I bought this bass brand new, and it's worth a lot of money. I would say don't buy that product, but it's no longer available anyway.
Ouch. You should contact Planet Waves and see what THEY can do before you send it to Martin. If their product was faulty, they should foot the bill.
That's a bummer. You should contact the folks at D'Addario and calmly explain to them the situation. Maybe something good will come of it.
Oh man, that truly sucks. But Wild Trky is right. It's worth a shot to send those pics to Planet Waves to see what they have to say. They'll probably say you used it improperly, but it's worth a try...
WOW WEE!! That is bad, wish I could help you out, but I'm not sure where to start. I wish you the best of luck in coming to a resolution to this hanus ordeal.
Whoa Vic! I kinda like it, its relic'd now! But on a serious note, Im with the advice of contacting Planet Waves.. for sure. This is a very sad thread man.
Just did that earlier tonight. I'll see if they respond. I've also emailed them to Martin for info on options. I've also sent the information to a lawyer. I'm still guessing I'm SOL, probably some disclaimer in the original packaging long lost, but I'll still give them the opportunity to do the right thing. This is CLEARLY a product failure with resulting collateral damage.
Those pics break my heart. A big thanks for the heads up on this. A lot of people don't think to post stuff like this (with pics too!) because they would just rather push the misery behind them and move on. I hope you find some kind of satisfactory resolution in all this. Keep us posted.
As an acoustic guitarist also, I was aware that Planet Waves had problems with those humidifiers because they leaked. Then I think they allegedly fixed them and they might be on the market again. When did you get yours Vic? I do NOT use them, and after seeing your damage, I will NOT. Yikes dude. That SUCKS bad! I use an Oasis Humidifier in my Santa Cruz Acoustic Guitar. Requires distilled water, but works and lasts a long time. And they are not known to leak. Have you contacted D'Addario to see if they will take care of your repair or replacement?
Yeah, well I looked on their web site and this product isn't even offered anymore, so it's moot at this point for you guys, thankfully. Gee... I wonder why this product was discontinued... hmmm... Me too, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
Wow, that's pretty close to heartbreaking, Vic. I do hope that PW comes through in some way to take responsibility and clean up the mess - and that involves getting your bass back in playing and cosmetically sound shape.
Maybe you can find others that had the same problem and put together a class-action lawsuit. That is, if Planet Waves doesn't do anything for you. Sorry about your instrument. S.
+ Pick a REALLY BIG number! Stuff like this just pi$$es me off! Too many musicians have to deal with enough BS as it is!
So I'm checking D'Addario's Web site for a heavier low E string than the .084 which comes with the XL156 set that I use on my MIJ Fender VI and I find... PDF Fretboard Care I think to myself "excellent", and download & read the file until I come across this: "How often do I condition my fretboard? Every time you change your strings, you should clean & condition your fretboard. This will remove the dirt, sweat and grime that build up on the neck and around the frets. In addition, it will keep your fretboard looking brand new. Figures 4.1: Spray the Planet Waves Hydrate Fretboard conditioner right onto the fretboard...."
If they don' t do anything and a lawsuit end's up as a no go, you could also take up firearm's as a 2nd hobby. Just a suggestion.
