Warped Jazz Pickguard

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by Tom Neves, Feb 13, 2003.

  1. Anyone out there have an old Jazz with a warped pickguard?
I have a 63, and the guard while not extremely warped is warped on most of the outside edge.
Any suggestions on how to flatten it out?
I thought of laying a heavy weight on it out in the sun for a short while. (While off the bass of course!)
Have any of you guys tried to correct this type of problem with good results?
I don't want to make it worse than it already is!
    Suggestions ?

If I were you, I'd remove it, put it under something not too heavy, and install a replacement guard. I wouldn't use the original guard at all unless you want to sell the bass.

The one on my '70 is not warped, but like typical tortise, it has shrunk. It was so tight around the pickup hole and some of the screw holes are slightly misaligned. But it is in very nice shape with no cracks or anything.
That said, I'm thinking of just getting a genuine Fender replacement tortise guard and putting this one away with my box of other saved stuff.
