Watching McCartney 3, 2, 1

  1. As the title says watching McCartney 3, 2, 1 on Hulu, apparently it's a Hulu original documentary. Only in the second episode but pretty good so far and I love the occasional bass isolation lines (parts) on Beatles songs.
If you have access to it give it a go!

Really liking it so far! It’s nice that it’s not the same old Beatles stories that i’ve heard a hundred times. And breaking down the songs like they do is really cool!

I thought it was GREAT. Very relaxed, genuine and fun, as well as informative.

I have loved The Beatles since age 2, 1964. I once again have refreshed appreciation for the group, and even deeper reverence for Macca's contribution to bass playing. Some of the things they pointed out were wonderous.

Watched the first episode last night. I am hardly a huge Beatles fan but I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it…and some of the music that was played. When Rick changes the mix in one of the tunes (My Guitar Gently Weeps?) between the heavier bass and drums and the lighter voice and acoustic guitars….pure magic.

Being more of a Stones than Beatles fan my entire life I found hearing about the studio magic & song construction very interesting. The Fab Four rocked more than I gave them credit. Having been in a studio I loved hearing Paul's fly-on-the-wall perspective on recording, which was very similar to my own experience.......sans the worldwide success.

l prefer the Stones but can certainly appreciate the Beatles more than I had in the past.

I get it. I come from the exact same perspective and have the same attitude. I don’t care for many (most) of their songs but definitely appreciate their craftsmanship and experimentation in the studio. George Martin’s influence aside , what’s interesting is how uncalculated Paul describes their process. I imaginged hours or days of working through painstaking arrangements. I’m sure there were days like those, but not always apparently.

I just bought Lewisohn’s book: the Complete Beatles Recording Session; notes from the Abbey Road years. It’s a fascinating read.

In the fall, I’m co-hosting a rock music podcast episode where we will do a deep dive into the White Album. Daunting but I’m looking forward to it. This is all a part of my research. Not being a “fan” I’m sure to say some things to upset the purists. But at the same time, I expect to surprise myself. At one time I was completely “anti-Beatles”. Just like I was “anti-Star Wars” in the 70s but have come to appreciate it since. Same for disco…hmmm…I see a pattern.
