Discussion in 'Bassists [BG]' started by russ_4ft, Feb 18, 2001.

  1. hey all,

just wondering all your oppinions on bassists that are the best to watch.
i quite like flea because he jumps around and does some pretty funny stuff but then there's the dude from mudvayne who just looks plain frightening...cool though.

yea ive seen flea live as well, even though hes not one of my favorite bassists, he can put on a show. as for the guy from mudvayne, id like to kick him in the ass, running around all dressed up like a fool, theyre whole band looks like a bunch of jackasses in my opinion, but hey, whatever gets you going, i guess people like seeing him run around dressed like the devil. if thats what you like, thats alright too. i have a footage of the meatpuppets and boy does their bassist get into it, hes entertaining, i heard mike watt can put on a show but ive never seen him live, though id like to.
  3. Tony Levin plays with those Funk Fingers, that is awesome to watch, Stu Hamm can tap out more solos than I will ever be able to play, I guess that's pretty cool to watch, but what your saying is you prefer naked men with crew cuts, to each there own.......

Only kidding as much as I am not a RHCP fan Flea puts on a HELL OF A SHOW!!!!!!!
  4. I quite like Mudvayne even though i'm not that much of a fan of 'heavy metal'.
I like that blokes appearence for a show, I think that it would make you want to go and see them play, Also have you seen how much publicity they attract just because of there appearence?
It would also be cool to go and see claypool because his outfits (Shorts, 70's porno shirts, captain fisherman hats) would probably make me laugh all night.

I would have thought a cool bassist would "lounge" or recline at the back of the stage, not moving a muscle, except maybe to light a French cigarette, while pulling off some very subtle lines. He would defintely be too "cool" to jump around or exert himself in any way.

It's cool for cats, man! ;)

If you've ever seen John Entwhistle, it's kind of weird, his fingers are flying and he's playing furiously and going all over the neck, without moving a muscle otherwise... stands perfectly still.. i've seen old Who concerts and he's always been like that, kinda weird, but cool. A real counterpoint to the manic pete townshend.
  8. bloody hell!
ok then, i define cool as being good, funny, interesting. it must be just because i'm english or something but i think of cool as what i said above.
I don't mean like someone who looks like the fonze, wears a leather jacket and shades!

oh well, we all differ in our judgements!

Far as energetic goes...Bass player for One Minute Silence...sheesh, talk about a rowdy guy. Jumping around, diving off stage, speaker towers, ect, Still playing bass,

just Cool like a Jazz cat...I'd have to say that There's this one bass player in my town, he's ok, but he's really laid back, pretty cool guy. Oh..wait, sorry, that's me:D:D
  10. Uhhh, the name is Bootsy baby.
    Or maybe Patrick O'Hern.
    Definately Percy Jones.
    No, wait, Stanley Clarke.
    Chris Squire. NO! Wait...

Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam plays such simple lines that he's the only member of the band that *can* jump around ! You should see this guy go .. wheeeeeeeee !!!! ;)

Nah - I'm as English as they come and "cool" has always been about laid-back elegance. Like "The Birth of the Cool" - Miles Davis. Miles epitomises the "cool" musician. It also applies to characters (usually private detectives) in "Film Noir".

Cool is detached, unemotional, unflustered - "cool under pressure" etc - as opposed to "Hot" which is of course the opposite! ;)

Like we even have a "cool" smiley - with shades

Jack Bruce is a trip to watch - all that sound coming from a guy who does figure-8's with one finger. Made me want to go home and throw rocks at my bass.
Then there was the bass clinic with Billy Sheehan. Another guy who barely moves any of his fingers, but sounds a whooooole lot different.
I agree with Tony Levin - I've seen him with Gabriel and King Crimson. He's just plain cool.

steve harris and billy sheehan are nuts on stage.

phil lynott's emotion when he sings and plays is awesome. no wasted motion.

I am the coolest bassist to watch. When i was younger, I used to come out in everything from cowboy hat's to granny clothes and do all kinds of acrobatics. I have knocked people over in the crowd and on stage before. I've fallen into drums and knocked the kit over. I've tripped off stage. I've smased guitars. You name it.

Oh, and Chris Squire will drive you crazy trying to watch him. He's playing in one rhythm, while moving in another, and then he starts singing in a third.
  17. ok, i'm fighting a battle i can't win here.
I see cool as how i see it.

tell me, would you look at flea and say to someone 'he's pretty cool'? i have done before because he's interesting.

i wouldn't say 'he's hot'. people would get the wrong idea!!

    I would just say :

"That bloke's a NUTTER!" jumping about and drsssing up in stupid outfits, taking his clothes off all the time - Nutter seems very apt ...or total loony! In the nicest possible sense. ;)

If he was English we would say - eccentric!

i'm not impressed by twirling fartknockers on stage. i like the more subdued individuals, but i don't like the guys that just stand there either. i mean, if i bought a ticket, i better see some guys making at least minor fools of themselves :D

that's the way i approach it when i'm playing - not too wild but definitely not just standing there staring at the floor.

It suits him nowadays, when someone has gray beard, you don't expect him to do sommersaults on stage :D He's good tho, saw The Who live at Albert Hall 2000 last night, he pulled a 5min bass solo with somekinda distortion.. Might had been distortion+octaver, ponder.
