Watt, how did you learn to slap?

Kind of an off-beat question for you, but I'm curious. I read that a local musician taught both you and D. Boon about playing music. Did he teach you slap? Where did you pick up your slap technique? Bassists now have the advantage of training videos, but as far as I know, there was no formal training method for slap when you were starting out.
