I heard a band last night where it looked like the bassist was playing a typical 4 string jazz bass....the tone was awesome............as I listened and watched, I noticed that the bass was acutually a 5 string with a narrow neck almost the same width as a 4 string. I have always been a 4 stringer and thought to myself "I might actually be able to play one of those."
Myrtle Beach's Clark Sullivan was playing the guitar so I asked him about the instrument. It is a 20 year old ESP and his favorite because of the string spacing.
Very nice piece, I'd like to try one....

Yep ... I got the idea from the Rickenbacker 4003s5 ...

    Rimg0714.

So I build parts basses and frankenstein basses where I put 5 strings on 4 string necks.

I get asked that a lot ... the reality is a pickup with 8 poles covers 4 or 5 strings equally well.

So, the question remains......is that ESP a factory 5 string or a conversion? Should have asked Clark. It was a 5 on top all black neck on a white body.....very nice.

awesome! Thanks for the info, its not the first time I've wondered how an 8 pole 4 banger pup would work on a 5 string.

Keep throwing together the awesome basses :bassist:

Just find a Yamaha BB5000 neck-thru - the old ones with narrow string spacing - and be done. SUPREME instrument.

    2 1/2" +/- at the bridge and 1 5/8" +/- at the nut.

Back in the 80s there were several companies that made slim necked 5 string basses.

I have a third one (fretted), but not selling.

These are really quite good instruments. You can find them from time to time somewhere from $700-$950, depending on who else is looking at that time.

Aside from the bass (wood) the rest is great. the pickups are amazing, as well. Just very tight, hard to slap on.

  17. Westone Spectrum V has the narrowest string spacing I've ever played on a 5er. I'd move up to the A and accidently hit the D string...That bass didn't last long..

    100_2514.

    [Not my bass]

I'm pretty sure the neck gets more narrow towards the bridge..

The 2 narrowest I have played are the Rickenbacker 4003s5 and the Steinberger 5.

The Rickenbacker 4003s5 is ok at the nut but at the bridge it is 2 1/16"
