Yee-haw! Getting ready for a wedding gig tonight. My wedding gigs aren't like most. The couples getting hitched are usually regulars at our shows, so we don't have to play the typical wedding songs or get all fancied up. Tonight's couple are serious dead heads, so The Kind got the call. I've got my jeans and my Roscoes ready to roll :D

We've been asked to play a few Dead tunes that I've never played or even heard before, so this week I've actually forced myself to listen to the Dead for the first time in years. Jerry's guitar tone is still an ice pick in my ears and I still wish at least ONE of the drummers would hit the darn skins like he means it... BUT I will say I've had fun picking out some of Phil's stylistic tendencies on bass. He uses lots of octaves and other large interval gaps to create counterpoint within his own playing, and it'll be fun to incorporate some of that tonight. As I've mention previously, I usually sound more like John Entwistle playing Dead tunes than I sound like Phil. A little nod to Phil in my playing is probably due...

We're also pulling out some new tunes by The Band. I was never a big fan of Rick Danko's playing, either. I actually called him Rick Stanko back in the day - sorry, Rick!! But once again it's been fun re-listening to a bunch of stuff that I used to dismiss as crap. The grooves are there, and the notes are pretty tasty. Kudos to the late Rick Danko!

Can you tell I turned 40 today?!? :rollno: I can just feel the wisdom seeping into me at every turn. When I start lauding the vocal stylings of Madonna, somebody please shoot me :help:

BTW, I abhor Madonna as a *human* but love much of her music- the cheesier, the better. Shoot me, shoot me now.

    ^ Nice!! ROFL

I can't stand when one of her early songs come on the radio, an my initial reaciton is always the same... I love this song! Then I remember it's Madonna and that I just love the good times I've associated with it. I gag for about 10 minutes, then I'm all good.

And what's wrong with sounding like Entwistle... when you play anything? :)

    Happy Birthday Greg :hyper:

Can your wife learn to deal with you being a "Wedding Bassist" instead of the spandex wearing mullet Rockin' version of your youth?

(Bad Adam Sandler Movie joke )

    :bag:

    :D

Have a great one man! ;)

    God Bless, Ray

    Thanks!!

Hah! That's how I spent the first 25 years of my playing. Rock? Entwistle. Country? Entwistle. Blues? Entwistle.

I think a little branching out will do wonders for me :)

Now now, Roscoes are for young people.

    Get a Fender or something.

    :p

  11. Happy 40th Birthday Greg. Go ahead and play those Dead tunes as John Entwistle would.
    They'll sound better....

Easy man! You own the store. Tuck you one away in the back and when the time is right you tell your wife nobody bought this Roscoe and Danny said we need the wall space. Can it stay Pleeeese? It's been immunized from Gard and everything (insert sad puppy eyes)

    See above :smug:.

Here's to you having a heckuva time. Take a cab ;)

    God Bless, Ray

  14. Happy Birthday! I just hit 42 last week.

My Roscoe was my mid-life crisis, I think. There's this red Ducati, though...

That's sort of what I did with my fretless... went over like a ton of bricks. That approach will NOT be repeated :help:

Nope, I just need about 100 more wedding gigs like tonight's... it's good money playing weddings!!

...happy birthday man, if I were there, I'd buy you a beer.

No, not a Bud Light, a beer.

    Happy birthday, amigo.
What's wrong with a little "icepick in the brain" guitar tone? Albert Collins built a career on it...

Peace and a mighty groove to ya!

    But Grandpa - I need a 6-string, not a six-pack!!

Koa on SwampAsh, Ebony on wenge wedge, Bart/Bart... hmmmmmm :ninja:

  20. Hey now, let's not get carried away, maybe older brother here!

    ...heck, I'm only 46!!!

    :spit:

...but I totally support the need for BOTH a good six-pack and a good six-string.

    :)
