Was just thinking about a couple of weekends in a frat house over the summer of '79. Some resident had left there a 3x15 refrigerator that had two 15's facing forward, and one firing... STRAIGHT UP. There was a little structure built over the top speaker (even sounds funny to SAY it) consisting of four legs at the corners of the main box which supported a plywood "roof", I guess, also the size of the top of the main box. And there was a solid wooden cone attached to the underside of this "roof", apparently to disperse the sound of the top speaker 360 degrees. And there was black grille cloth around the four open sides of this "shed" like a veil, adding to the mysterious vibe of this thing.

This was all covered in the same beat-up Tolex, so it really looked like the factory MEANT it, not like an aftermarket fix-up.

Anybody else ever seen one of these beasts?

    And what's YOUR weirdest sighting?

    That´s deffinetly weird...

I could only name some "different" cabs.. like:

    1) Ampeg´s 9x10" (I saw it once at Ebay)

    2) Bose´s Acoustic Cannon (Just Imagine a Bass Guitar being reproduced by that)

    3) Grateful Dead´s Wall of sound by Rob Wickersham. Not actually a cab but lotta cabs together.

The strangest cab I've ever seen was in a picture of Stanley Clarke from the 70's--a plexiglass dome covered with 16 5" speakers. It looked kinda like a spaceship, or a chocolate chip cookie. :D

John Entistle played one those for while also, with a huge folded horn underneath it. I don't recall who built it.

Did Rickenbacker ever make a bass cabinet with a 36-inch speaker? This is a serious question. I think I remember seeing one in a catalog, about 1973.

I remember Trace Elliot used to have a guitar cabinet with 3-12" (I think). The cab was folded in such a way that the three speakers actually were angled inwards and upwards! Anybody remember those?

I was just gonna post something about that. I recall someone talking and even showing pictures in a thread a while back of a cab that had like a 36" speaker, and I recall someone saying that you had to turn it a completel 180 degrees each year, so the magnet wouldn't weigh the speaker down to the point of the speaker breaking from the weight.

God, I bet a low b or low e on one of those things could kill.

I guess, if you had enough power behind it. Anyway, thanks for the corroboration, CrawlingEye. I was wondering if my memory was just a delusional artifact of the 1970's.

No problem, although, I'm not quite positive on the size, I just remember an oddity of a speaker... and I'm not quite sure if Rick makes it... Although, I'll take your word that Rick makes it... Like I said, I just remember an insanely huge speaker.

I believe it is a 30" , Electro Voice Made.

The other day I saw one of this beasts destroyed, I took some pictures but they were blurry as the site where I took them was very dark.
I will try finding them and posting for reference.
Btw, this driver was very old and found it in Esmeraldas - Ecuador on one of my trips around the contry in my Motorcycle. I was amused at actually seeing on of those Live!

On the other Hand, there was a Fender Bass Man 4x12" where all the speakers fired to the center of the cab.
1 on Top, 1 on each side , and one onthe bottom

wouldn't that make 6? unless it was in the shape of a tetrahedron... (triangular pyramid) and that would certainly look cool.

    My mistake in the description..

    Imagine a Box..
with Speakers positioned this Way seeing it from the front.

    +
    + +
    +

All of them are angled to Fire to the Center of the FRONT of the Cab.
They still fire to the front but with an angle to the center.

Now Imagine That front as the Inside of a Piramid.. and the top of the piramid is going inside of the cab,
Can you picture how the Speakers look?

    Luis,
Yeah,I've seen those.I think Trace used to make something like that.

I've seen all kinds of folded horn enclosures and stuff like that, but I think the weirdest design, one that actually works is the SWR henry the 8x8.if you like 'tite' bass tone,it's worth checking out.just looks weird to me.
