I was out cake shopping for my mother's birthday yesterday. I saw the selection in the bakery, then went for a walk to make up my mind on which one I wanted to get. On the way, I walked by a pawn shop I go in regularly and decided to take a look. In this shop all basses hang from hooks on a rack like pieces of meat, so you have to pull 'em down if you want to get a decent look. In the midst of the deja vu, one bass neck came to my attention: It was made of a dark wood instead of the usual maple. I looked at the back of the body where the price was located. $249. Not bad, I thought. The color was a little drab and there was a big spot where the finish was worn through, revealing the wood underneath. I pulled the bass down turned it around to see its pickup configuration to find:

Yup, not one, but two bartolini MM pickups and a badass II bridge! The neck turned out to be a Warmoth rosewood/ebony jobbie. I asked to plug the bass in and it sounded pretty good, considering the strings are dead. I talked them down to $200 and went home with an extra bass and no cake. (I got one later, don't even go there):p

Anyway, as far as I can tell, this must have been someone's attempt to create a super Jeff Berlin bass, as the electronics are passive. I'm still deciding if I want to have active electronics installed. The current setup is like a Jazz bass with a coil tap on both pickups. All I know is this ugly finish has to go...eventually.

Sad part is, I made a new year resolution not to buy any basses during 2002! well, at least I made it halfway.

    Here's another crappy pic.

  6. I'm sure it is probably a nice bass even though you got it for $200. But when I got to the thread or try to copy the link to another browser it say dailly account bandwidth exceeded for photos.onebigvillage.com.
