I've heard that many times over. Wel. I have a personal solution for that.
Get a bigger amp and crank up the gain. That should do it.

My philosophy is that when you're a hammer, the whole world is a nail...

  2. I played in an 8 piece 60’s soul and Motown band for 9 years with a Jazz Bass. Never had a problem. Maybe the SVT(MTI) and 6x10 cab had something to do with it. :bag:

Depends on a lot of things, your amp, & who's in the band, just for starters.

The problem with a lot of jazz bass players is that their favorite bedroom tone is scooped with both pickups wide open. That sound gets buried in the mix of most bands/genres... unless one deploys your "solution" of simply cranking up. Then it becomes volume wars.... and nobody "wins" volume wars.

This is something I've rarely had trouble with.

50 years and 6 months ago James Brown did not say a Jazz bass couldn't cut through the mix.

I didn't even know Led Zep had a bass player until I saw them.

I’ve always played my Jazzes with both pickups on full and have never had a problem, be it with a trio or with a twenty-piece band playing anything from standards to funk to reggae.

    1) I never said EVERY bass player scoops.

    2) I run sound as well as play bass. YOU might not be having a problem. But sometimes your soundguy may be. A scooped jazz bass tone is just about the hardest bass tone to get to cut through. It takes some EQ (mids) acrobatics. And, I assure you, in most cases, the sound coming out of the PA is not what you're hearing on stage.

It's not anything that has to be argued here. But a scooped jazz bass tone sounds amazing in the bedroom.... not so much in a live mix, except in rare cases.

Only a bass player can even hear a difference.

Maybe I’ve just been lucky with my Jazz basses. Regardless, I do often talk to the sound guys I work with, so I’m not just living in a bubble on stage. :)
