What about the ESP LTD D-5 makes it sound like it does?

I have played one a few times at the store. It's a $450 bass (I know that means nothing really) and it sounds really nice. Here's a link:

I'm terrible at describing tone, but it has a really tight, focused sound. Very modern. Very different from my Yamaha.

Yamaha - Bartolini Jazz pups and Bartolini preamp
LTD - ESP Soapbars and ESP preamp

Both have 3 band EQ, both are 34" scale. What gives the LTD that sound? Is it something I can EQ? Is it the different style pups? Can I get that kind of sound from my bass?

Lots of vague topics to cover, but, the easiest thing to try first is find out what kind of strings are on it. I recently switched from EB Slinky strings to DRs on my more modern basses and the difference is truely amazing. Based on this I plan to do more string experimenting in the future. There are TONS of things that could make the difference in tone between the two basses, but strings are the easiest and cheapest thing to try first. Hope this helps.

I have DR Hi Beams on mine. Not sure about the LTD - stock whatever that is.
