Need your wisdom talkbass... New music project with friends... four piece, two guitars, rock music. What would be the minimum I can get by with amp/cab wise? I know, buy used... but just give me best bang for my buck new or used in the $1500-$2000 range.

I haven't bought amp / cab gear in a while so I want to consult the experts. Looking for light solutions so solid state or tube pre w/ SS and neo cabs

For the head, that Mesa will do you nicely. I'd look locally for cabs if you can, save on the shipping.

Cab price is shipped. Good luck finding one of those for 600 cash and carry! Even including shipping, you're under budget on that rig.

    Edit....
Full disclosure here; there is indirectly something in it for me. I don't need that cab but that price has me GAS ing. Somebody save me from myself and buy it before I do.

+1 for the Genz Benz 212.
I wanted one but couldn't find one locally.
Amp: depending on how loud you guys are, I'd suggest a minimum of 500 watts.
Mesa are a favourite amp here on TB but I'm yet to find one I liked.
I'd suggest a Genz Benz GBE750, although hardly lightweight, it'd be great with the suggested cab.

Grab that GB 212 and that Mesa Subway. Amazing combo. I'd buy that 212 myself but I already have 2 of them

My light solution is a Behringer BDI21 V Tone preamp/DI pedal and play though the PA.

Let’s go shopping!!! I love spending other peoples money :smug:
$1800 for a pair (112 and/or 115’s) of the best cabs you can get your hands on and $200 for whatever amp you will find and a Di cable for FOH.

Whether you can go to FOH and just have a rig for stage monitoring is a real consideration. If stage volume is under control, you don't need all that much.

I have a board that I will use as basically my preamp, tone shaping tool. I could possibly go to FOH for the show we’re planning for the fall but I need a bass rig for all the upcoming practices.

Tight funky Punchy Bass: GK Legacy 500/800 with CX410 (or 2 CX210's) these cabs weigh only slightly more than their Neo counterparts but are a bit less expensive.

Fat warm thick - Aguilar Tone hammer 500 - Aguilar SL 212's Cab

There are alot of thee around used so you could get the head for somewhere close to 500 used.

These are two of my favorites depending on the music I am playing.

99.9 % of the audience could care less what kind of gear you're playing. Your rig will sound the same to them. So it's either ego-nomics or ergonomics.

    My $0.02:

Mesa or Aguilar head. Rock solid tone and repair is straightforward. 500 watts or so.
2 matching lightweight 112 or 210 cabs. Lugging really heavy gear just to post pictures will lose it's luster.
Any decent Class D amp for a spare. 300-500 watts.
A solid DI pedal (again, Mesa or Aguilar would be a good place to start) in case you just need to go through FOH.

    Hahaha. It's only 40lbs dude. Nothing a push cart can't handle :)

If you have a PA, the micro vr stack is awesome. So are rb112/115 combos
