hey guys, looking to get a tone similar to Tim Commerford, I know I will need pedals and stuff but for a start, I'd like to know what strings to get. any suggestions? also, I have a Fender rumble 40, are there any ideal settings to get a tone similar to his? this amp has tons of knobs and buttons etc.
I assume you’re playing either a Jazz Bass or Stringray? Not sure what strings Tim uses but I think a big part of his sound comes from those two signature elements and a big old SVT. If you aren’t starting with any of those things, trying some stainless steel strings and scooping the EQ could get you going in the right direction.
actually it's an Ibanez sr300e, but I want to get as close as possible to the sound/tone without buying a stingray
You boost bass and treble while cutting the mid-range. Bear in mind, this setting can sound good on its own, but can also be counter to sitting well in a live mix with other instruments.
hit the contour button and back off the high mids. Pop into the Rumble Club. They have a 'tone pool' with a bunch of settings and also a slew of knowledgeable & helpful folks.
Looks to me that Tim either endorses or is endorsed by Ernie Ball. So Cobalt Slinkys would be a good start. I've never played them, but there are some strong adherents here.
