what causes an itch?

    simple enough. i just got an itch on my right shoulder, so i wondered why. what causes them? and why does scratching them make them go away?

    Lets see how much I (mis)remember from my HS Bio course 3 years ago...
    IIRC, it has something to do with either blood vessels and nerves, or just nerves. And when you scratch it, it promotes something to flow or something... aw hell, I can't remember. Somebody answer now, cos this is going to bug me that I don't remember something I once knew!!

    like the link said...in the absence of any environmental irritant or histamine response from an alergan..the primary cause is dry skin.

    The scratch helps slough off the dry skin and promote circulation.
