What causes this effect on older bass recordings?

    I've just watched this video:

    East of Eden, Bathers.

And on the bass intro, whenever the bassist is hitting notes on the E string it sounds almost like he is playing two notes a rough semitone apart. There seems to be a similar effect on the intro to Eight Miles High by the Byrds. Is it a product of the amps they had back then or poorly set up basses or some other factor?
  2. I think it's just from natural amp overdrive making things sound a little gravelly

If that sound came out of my rig,
    I would think:
    1. Did my string just go bad on me?
    2. Did my bridge get hit and shift the saddle half an inch off?
    3. Is my pickup too close to the string?

I just had to replace an E string that was doing that. Went bad after about 2 hours on the bass. Died right in the middle of a song.
Started out brand new zing. 3 minutes later, thunk thunk thunk.

  5. Possibly print through on aging analog magnetic master or 2 track stereo mix tape?

My guess would be a little amp/speaker distortion(aka "grunt") and/or some mic or input clipping on the recordings. If you slam a tube amp hard with flats and a pick it's going to grunt a little, especially with some of the low wattage speaker offerings of the time.

FWIW, if I was playing psychedelic rock I'd be fine with this.

It sounds like the bass is out of tune with itself and out of tune with the guitar.

I've noticed something like this on Gang of Fours "Entertainment!" Record.

I didn't really hear anything that stuck out. For the most part I liked the sound, no "mud" in the EQ from the sound guy like we typically hear these days.

that music makes me feel like I should be on drugs to listen to it.
