Im looking into buying a new bass.

I started with a Silvertone starter package.

The bass has a nifty thumb rest. It has split pickups.

On a bass like this http://www.music123.com/ESP-B50-i63699.music where would I put my thumb? I couldnt play that far towards the bridge using the bigger PUP. And the screws holding the other pickups on hurts very badly.

Its alot harder to use fingerstlye without resting my thumb somewhere.

    Help.

Well, you could put it on either side of the neck pup, or on the bridge pup. Or you could get a thumb rest and put it inbetween the pups, thats what I did!
    Peace!

I like to put it on the bridge pickup. Tighter sound and the string doesn't move as much. If you don't play as aggresive and you want a more rounder tone, move towards the neck.

rest it on either pickup and then when you descend strings anchor it on the string preceding the one you're playing

eg if you're playing the D string, rest your thumb on the A
