What do the wraps do on certain strings?

Discussion in 'Strings [BG]' started by skit_skittson, Feb 10, 2002.

  1. I've noticed whenever I have bought a bass the strings have wraps on the tops but when I buy a new set, they don't have wraps. What do the wraps do and do they affect the sound at all?

The wraps are colored silks that some manufacturers claim protect the instrument (tuner shaft) from damage from the steel string. That's not true IMO. You must be buying a brand that has no silks like D'Addario EXL, Ernie Ball Slinky, or any of the DR types. I think the silks are purely cosmetic. D'Addario Slowounds have a different color for each string!
