I just bought my Warrior bass (bolt-on, swampash body, mahogany/purpleheart/mahogany neck, purpleheart fretboard, Bartolini soaps, bartolini 3-band 18v preamp) see pic below. I also now have an SWR 12 stack (4x12 no tweet 8ohm 800watts R.M.S.). I am now searching for my head. I am considering a Gallien Krueger 1001. I know that I am supposed to trust my ear but the only thing within 400 miles for my ear to hear is peavey, and fender combos. How do you think the GK would sound with my cab and bass? I need something versatile that I can get used for less than $500. Needs some power to. One thing I like about the GK is 540 watts. Although it's only like 380 at 8 ohms.
if I were you I'd go straight for a power amp and borrow a preamp for the time being. how about yamaha cp2000, 1000per ch stereo or 2000w into 4ohmns bridged. your 12 stack will probably never sound really good until you get above the handling capacity of the cab. don't get me wrong it could make noise with 300-400 watts, but you'll get amp distortion way before you reach the volumes you were hoping to achieve with a 412! some people like QSC?, CRown, peavey power amps I'd go for the yamaha. is $400 new on musiciansfriend.com!!!!!!! my friend has one and swears by it with his RBI as a pre.
The 1001RB is a great sounding amp. Between its four band EQ, variable Contour and Presence controls and 4 string/5 string voicing switch, there are a lot of tones to be had.
i run a gk 1001rb with a hartke 410 most times. I also do 2 hartke 410's. I never turn up more than 12 o'clock. I have the boost pegged, with woofer control on 12 o'clock. It's always as loud as I ever need it. I am in a band with 3 guitarists, and it still cuts thru.
