I've found a combination of a source audio mw bass distortion with some octave up, some BEF pro, and the distortion channel on my m-80 that gets me in the ballpark, but I was wondering what others were using for funky clavinet sounds... Thoughts/experiences???
While I can't actually duplicate a legit clavinet -- life should be so wonderful-- the closest I get is with my POG. The octaves up with the right string attack mimic the percussive tone of the funkiest of the keyboard tones.
Assuming a clavinet is what I think it is (funky hammondlike organ, right?), there's this guy on youtube who uses a pog2 to get very close. The organy stuff starts around 55 secs in.
The Boss SYB-5 gets a clav-ish sound. I think it's #7 on the mode switch. You have to tweak the other knobs a bit to get the sound right http://youtu.be/eYaaQ044ETU?t=4m14s
A clavinet is more like a piano in that it has strings inside, but rather than hitting the strings with a hammer (like a piano) the strings are plucked (like a harpsichord). That's why it can sound much like a guitar.
Really? Huh. Thanks for clearing that up. Not sure if that vid I posted is applicable in that case, but you might still like it.
I think the Pog 2 would probably improve my results, but alas it's not on my board so I will give a go with some similar octave up/down with my M5 and see if I get better results. As I think about it, my SA BEF Pro is in parallel right now but if it were chained after it it may give me a bit better control, but I need it after for other applications... This thread gave me some other things to try, thanks.
Does anyone have any samples or videos of the EHX POG doing a clav sound? Every time I've tried one all I could get is organ sounds
So since reading this thread, I've spent hours on youtube funking out to people playing clavinets. Cool stuff! Edit: Well, more like minutes actually. Still funky though.
I don't think you can get the clav with a pog alone (definitely not a micro pog but you get a bit closer with a pog 2)... I would think you could combine it with a bit of attack from an envelope filter and some dirt for the crispy overtones... The pog just gives the basic harmonic platform IME.
Lots and lots of sample-based Clavinet models in the softsynth world. I like the Clavs in Propellerheads Reason a lot.
