What do you wear (typically) to a gig?

Depends on the venue, but I've always been in "jeans and sneakers" kind of bands.
There should be a category of music called just that...

Black jeans or slacks, depending on the gig. Not shorts.

Shirt - button down with collar - usually solid dark color. Not black if on stage (tends to blend in). Summer casual gigs, I will wear some summer printed shirts (see below).

Black puma sneakers for rock or jazz gigs, cowboy boots for country. Black shoes for corporate type gigs.

I like hats, but my wife doesn't, so generally no.

I apologize for the bass face. It was a good groove.

He needs to get some clothes that fit. Wearing stuff that fit you in junior high, but doesn't any more: not a good look.

It's sort if a catch-all term for "outdated" jeans these days. Also, too much fabric bunched up at the shoes is a dead giveaway. (It usually stems from dads being too proud to buy jeans with an inseam shorter than their waist size. In other words, you should be wearing 34-32 or 34-30 jeans but you insist on 34-34.)

Also light colors.


Tje worst offenders are the Geezers who rock black as night or super dark blue jeans with bleach white brand new sneakers.... particularly New Balance.

Entirely depends on your genre. But for me. No shorts. No trainers/sneakers. No band t shirts.
Usually a machine washable cheap black suit, white shirt and white brothel creepers. I may try a different look for the new band.
I don't want to look like a punter who's just walked up from the audience when I'm on stage.

I've played in backup bands for the last 15 years, almost all the front singers are female.
The official backup musician's uniform is black except for the singer. The Vocalist will wear some kind of nice and/or hot looking clothes.
Over a third of my closet is black shirts, pants and shoes.

A thought occurs, the best thing to wear on stage which covers all genres....A healthy body.

Think about it, a fitness model is going to look good even in rubbish clothing.

Yes, age , genes, medication, injury etc will set a cealling on what we can achieve, but if we look after ouselves we will look better in everything.

We have a red & black color theme to our band, and I'm the designated opposite. They may all wear red bottoms and a black top, and I'll do a red top w/ black bottoms, and vice versa. It works pretty well and I'm happy with having a theme. Unfortunately my closet is now full of tons of red & black gear.
