What does " x " mean in tablature?

  1. this may the stupidest question ever but,what does " x " mean? some say its mute,but how do you mute? Can someone please help me?

    X = dead/ghost note, a note without discernible pitch

    Lay your fingers (at least two to avoid unwanted harmonics) over the strings and pluck. Voila.

    Hold "note" in position and don't fret it.
