What effect is this and where can I find it?

Okay, my guitarist was messing around with his multi-effects pedal one day (an old Digitech model) and he had it set so that he could play a lick, loop it, play another, loop it again, and finally just solo over it with the two faux guitars looping for as long as he wanted, making it appear (or sound, rather) like there were three guitars playing. I'm guessing this is some sort of loop effect, but what I'm wondering is if there's an equivalent effect for bass? Better yet, is there an equivalent Digitech multi-effects pedal that has looping capabilities for bass?

The effect is called "looping", you can perform that effect with "a looper".

the digitech bnx-3 has some rudimentary looping from what I understand.

There's also a bunch of dedicated ones: boomerang, boss rc-20, echoplex, akai headrush. They all have their pros and cons - there are plenty of threads available via the search button.
  5. The Boss Digital Delay pedal I have will do that. I think I have the DD-5, but I don't have it here so I can't check.
