what exactly does a patch bay do?

    In the studio or with a large live set up you use a patch bay to quickly and easily link gear together...you can 'patch' a signal though a variety of different paths by plugging and unplugging cords on the face of the unit...think of it like one of those old telephone patch boards that operators used in the 40's and such...but with rack gear on the other end.
