I'm auditioning for a band that wants a bass with straight tuning but with a low B string. What gauge strings should I use for the B, and while your at it what about the other strings too?

    THANKS!

Thanks for all your great responses. Luckily I found an ancient thread with the info I needed.

I picked up a 125 gauge 'cause I play with my fingers and figured it would be a good place to start.

  3. does anyone know the biggest gauge of string that would be feasable to put on a btb 5 string?

.125's on mine. I know alot of players like a thicker string but to me I feel I can get a better "growl" out of a thinner string.

I've got a .119 TI Powerbass on my Curbow Petite 5, and a TI Jazz Flat .136 on my Curbow Petite 6. Both sound amazing, and are the most balanced feeling B strings in comparison with the rest of the set compared to other brands I've tried.

The Powerbass strings are more expensive, but the set on my Jazz are 4 months old, and still sound new--I don't even wipe my strings down after I play.

Mostly 130 but I've used 125 and 128 with good results, too.
