i also checked Fender's website and this bass wasnt listed in the basses roster- the page exists , i see that- but i also heard they were discontinued.. but im not sure-
i started a custom Jazz thread and now a very busy pro bassist here in Vegas just told me he scored a fiver and its the best 5 string hes ever played- and he has owned a few -- so i am interested as well-- and intrigued

That's strange, because I took the normal way to reach the FMT V basses :

Gear > Electric basses > American Deluxe > Jazz Bass > American Deluxe Jazz Bass V FMT

The FMT V I have is a damn nice bass. People regularly try to get me to sell it to them. Happened again last night. It's the real deal... I started to suggest it in your other thread but saw you already bought parts. I considered doing the same thing too until I found my FMT. I'm pretty sure I can't assemble a bass this nice for the same price.

So let me ask you this, is the B string floppy on your FMT V, and did you here of them taking the FMT V off the market????????? I may get one if I come across one, that is if the members here can help convince me if its worth it or not. I really respect the advice on this forum so ............
    SERVE IT UP!

    PEACE!

I bought an FMT 5 from Sweetwater Music about 3 months ago. It was a beautiful bass; unfortunately, its neck was severely defective. The neck had a severe bow and heel warp; the truss rod did nothing for the bow. It needed a new neck. I worked with the Fender service center here to no avail. They couldn't get a replacement neck in a timely fashion. Then Sweetwater told me that Fender said that this model will be discontinued ( I covered this in a previous post). I ended up sending it back to Sweetwater for a full refund.

I will say that the sales guys at Sweetwater are first class in customer service. This defect problem was solely a Fender factory problem - poor quality control.

After this ordeal, I got to talk to a number of guys who have had a lot of experience with American Fender basses over the years, and they confirmed that the quality control has suffered. You may have to go through several basses before you find a good one. That's not to say that there are no good Fenders out there. Fellow TBers like Brad Johnson and Munji have really great FMTs that play as good or better than some $4,000 basses around here.

In order to buy a good FMT, you may have to search through a number of them to find the right one. Now that Fender has supposedly discontinued the FMTs, it will be harder to find the good ones.

I got to play an FMT last year when I was in Virginia, and was very impressed. It compared very favorably to my pricey Fender rip-off bass, and definitely would have passed the blindfold test. I coulda lived with it easily without any modifications, 'cept to my unblindfolded eyes, it was fugly. Especially no likey the gold hardware. Blecch. Sounded great though. If I owned one now, I definitely wouldn't let it go.

Sadowsky also sells the preamp that is in MM's bass for around 200 bucks, 4 hundred installed. they have a new factory in Brooklyn N.Y. where I live So for me it is a matter of finding the time to take a drive over there.

I was trying to find a 5er for a while. I liked all of the ones I'd played, unfortunately, they were married. In fact, when I offered my Eshenbaugh for trade, it was one of the basses I'd had in mind. GC has an amberburst 5, but I can't deal with the $1600+ price tag.

I don't understand what Fender do. Since a few months, they seem to collect what I think are mistakes. The latest one is that, supposingly, the FMT is about to be discontinued.

The more I see what Fender do, the more I want to get... USED Fenders.

I just put an Aguilar OBP-1 in my Fender Am Delux Jazz V and it makes the bass sound a million times better (in my opinion). Lots more punch than the stock Fender Pre and the OBP-1 is only about $100...

I'm not 100% sure about this, but before they were released, weren't they saying that the FMT's would be limited in quantities?

B strings fall into three camps IME: B's that are effortless to play and sound great, B's that may require a slight technique change and sound great and finally, B's that bite. On my FMT I don't play my B string like my G string and the result is...

    damned nice B.

Bear in mind though, I've gotten excellent results from the two stock MIA Jazz Deluxe 5's I own too. Maybe it's me;)
