What if I had $2,500 to spend on a nice 5-string

Let's pretend here - help me spend my Monopoly money. What's the best bang for your buck in this range? Nothing too radical - I'm thinking along the lines of:

    MTD 535 - used
Benavente Vintage Vortex - used, or can one be built for this much?
Marleaux Consat Custom - used (dreaming here)

Those are really the only basses I could justify spending that much money on (and they're still used!) - any other good ideas?

BTW - I'd have to sell my Q5 and save lots of money ;)

    Get a jorb :p

  3. Depending on the model, a Nordstrand might fit in that price range and would be well worth it.

I'd go for a F-Bass or a MTD. I'd reccomend a Ken Lawrence Brase but those are a bit more than $2500, if you could find one. If you want to save a bit of the money, a Lakland 55-94 would be good also.

BTW - I am only recommending basses I own/have owned - I only buy what I really like!

I would save up 200 more and Buy Progzilla's (Mark Beem's) Conklin Hollow Body 7 string, Custom bass, at $2700.

If you are thinking of going into a real EXTENDED range bass, This would be the one IMHO, it is at a Cheap price, and is a Custom Conklin...

I'd buy a StingRay-5 and send the remaining money to my dear friend, Art Poon. :D

Seriously, there are so many great 5-strings that would easily fall into the $2500.00 range. Some will be quite a bit less if you watch the used market. One of my favorites is the Modulus Q-5. There are a couple up for bid on ebay as we speak..er, type.

    Oop's I did'nt see you already have a Q-5! I'd probably go with the MTD-535 too.

Or I'd gather up a lot more monopoly bucks and buy an Alembic Series-II, in the Europa body style.

    Now we're talking!

A used, but not abused Pedulla Thunderbass falls into this range.

  17. I'll second that. Pete could make you a wicked 5-string for $2500.

  18. if you don't go too nutty on the wood options (fancy tops and very exotic woods) you could get a very nice custom made bass from many awesome builders.

Nordstrand and Benavente come to mind :D

I'd look at the Ken Lawrence Associates. I think the 5s are in your price range. He's a great guy who makes a killer bass.
