What if you have a stripped truss rod nut?

I'm looking into a 5 string jazz bass and it's got a stripped truss rod nut. Something tells me it's not as easy as unscrewing the rod and taking out the nut. Is this something I could fix my self or would I be looking at basically performing surgery on this thing. Is it a better idea to just replace the neck? If so, what's a good source for one?

I had the same problem with a fender jazz 5 string some years back, the neck will have to be replaced

That's what I was worried about. For the cost of the used bass and a new neck I could just get a new MIM Fender methinks.

    great pic, Mongo. :)

I would take it to a luthier/bass tech and see what they say.
